Name given to the day that, according to some pseudoscientific studies, would be the "saddest day of the year". It is celebrated on the third Monday of January and was coined in 2005 by British psychologist Cliff Arnall, who tried to formulate a formula to determine which day of the year was the most depressed. According to Arnall, the combination of factors such as the winter cold, post-holiday economic uncertainty, the end of the Christmas holidays and unfulfilled good intentions would contribute to this state of mind.

Arnall's "formula":

The formula Arnall created to calculate Blue Monday was as follows:

W = [ D ] × [ T ] × [ Q ] M × [ N ] \text{W} = \frac{[D] \times [T] \times [Q]}{M \times [N]}

Where:

  • D is for "debt," which is related to Christmas shopping.
  • T represents "time", which is the time elapsed since the beginning of the year.
  • Q stands for "time since Christmas."
  • M stands for "motivation", which is related to the difficulty of keeping good intentions.
  • N represents "the need to take action".

The concept of Blue Monday has been heavily criticized. Many experts, including psychologists and scientists, have pointed out that there is no solid scientific basis to support this theory. The date is not linked to universal psychological events and there is no evidence that the third Monday in January is objectively the saddest day of the year. The creation of Blue Monday has in fact been considered more of a marketing campaign than a real scientific analysis. Despite the criticism, the concept of Blue Monday is still very popular, especially on social media, where it has become an opportunity to talk about the sadness and difficulty of dealing with winter, but also to promote psychological well-being initiatives and solutions to improve your mood during this season. So don't let it influence you but dedicate yourself to shopping that always puts you in a good mood.
